CALVING AND LAMBING PTZ CAMERA SYSTEM, NEWPORT, SOUTH WALES.

CALVING AND LAMBING PTZ CAMERA SYSTEM, NEWPORT, SOUTH WALES.

About This Project

Kevin Rickard, a young farmer based near Newport, South Wales works for Cogent Breeding Ltd whilst also developing his own herd, Starlet Holsteins. Together with his fiancé Sian and her father Martin they run a 65 hectare farm consisting of 100 cows (50 elite Holsteins), 300 ewes and 33 hectares of arable, whilst all working off the farm in various other jobs.
Kevin and Sian are developing Starlet Holsteins with the aim of creating and breeding high quality Holstein stock.
They aim to achieve this by collecting the best embryos from top bulls and heifers from across the world. In January the loss of an expensive, one of a kind calf whilst calving meant that they needed to re-evaluate current practices and come up with a solution to never let it happen again. Martin and Kevin had previously visited numerous farms that have had security systems and stock management cameras installed by Select Security and became further aware about the company and its partnership with the NFU after reading Farming Wales.
It was then decided to have a camera fitted to prevent any further losses when lambing and calving. Mr Rickard stated:
“The morning after losing the calf we decided to call Select Security to come and install a camera to prevent this from happening again, they were quick to come out and survey our needs and get the camera fitted with minimal disruption”.
It is often said that the first calf and lambs you are able to save as a result of the camera system is often enough to pay for the system.
Select Security fitted a Pan Tilt Zoom camera in-between two bays of a shed which covered cows bulling and calving one side and ewes lambing the other. The pan tilt zoom camera allows movement between the two bays which can be controlled remotely from an iPhone or computer.
The camera is now being used to check on cows when calving and sheep whilst lambing. The camera is also used throughout bulling as the infrared, zoom and quality definition allows Mr Rickard to read the ear tag number and get a better idea of which cows have been through the bulling process.

Notes / Feedback

Mr Rickard stated “the camera is an excellent management tool for us, especially as we all work away from the farm and it enables three or four people to monitor the stock anytime day or night, as the camera can be monitored via an iPhone”.

He continued by saying “The camera allows us to not disturb the animals during calving or lambing which makes for easier births with fewer complications as we do not have to check on them every hour.

We can check the monitor and then make the decision as to whether we need to go out to the shed or not. Having the camera installed has allowed us to save many lambs and we have not lost any calves since it was installed”. Select Security was established in response to a gap in the market for rural and agricultural security and stock management systems.

The company has since branched out into providing high-tech systems for industrial, public sector and commercial clients, as well as high-end bespoke systems for residential customers.

What makes Select different is not only that it offers customers the very latest security technology – but its highly qualified engineers are willing to tackle any and every job, no matter how challenging the location. That includes installing systems on farms in remote areas with no electricity supply for miles.
