Fire Alarm For Grade II Listed Regency Hotel / Country House

Our Client

Porthmawr Country House is a recently refurbished, Grade II-listed country house with apartment, holiday cottage and function rooms. We assessed the fire risk to guests staying at the hotel and to update the fire alarm system to comply with British Standards. The installation work needed to have minimal impact on the listed building and its many irreplaceable features.

Notes & Feedback

The system went in on time and on budget (we are happy to say the system has never been needed as yet!). Should there ever be an incident the owners and guests can be safe in the knowledge they have the latest in fire detection technology protecting them all.

THE BRIEF

We used the Sterling Safety Systems Hy-Fire range of approved fire detection equipment and controlled this with an excellent Kentec addressable fire alarm panel. Before carrying out any wireless fire alarm work a full survey was carried out with specialist wireless test equipment to make sure we could specify the correct amount of transmission equipment in exactly the right places.

Overview

What was the problem?
Porthmawr Country House is a recently refurbished, Grade II-listed country house with apartment, holiday cottage and function rooms.
We assessed the fire risk to guests staying at the hotel and to update the fire alarm system to comply with British Standards. The installation work needed to have minimal impact on the listed building and its many irreplaceable features.

What security devices did you install?
We used the Sterling Safety Systems Hy-Fire range of approved fire detection equipment and controlled this with an excellent Kentec addressable fire alarm panel. Before carrying out any wireless fire alarm work a full survey was carried out with specialist wireless test equipment to make sure we could specify the correct amount of transmission equipment in exactly the right places. Old buildings have thick walls so we needed to make sure we could get the signal around the building with the highest possible strength and quality.
Once this was done the devices were installed wirelessly – this minimises any mess and takes a fraction of the time a hard-wired system would take to install. The main panel and transmitters are the only parts that need a permanent 240v/24v feed.

What challenges did you face in installing the system?
Our main challenge was having to install the system in every room in the building with minimal disturbance to its listed features and decor.

Any other work carried out?
We also project-managed an emergency light installation to cover the various hallways, rooms and doors around the property to ensure the people occupying the hotel can clearly see their way out in an emergency.
